We pulled onto the gravel driveway of the lake cabin just past midnight, the headlights cutting through the thick pine trees. The house was pitch-black and silent.

Using my spare key, I led the boy into the master bedroom, pulling back the heavy rug just as he had described. Concealed beneath a loose floorboard was a heavy steel safe, its digital keypad blinking softly.

I entered my father’s old birthdate. With a heavy click, the lock released.

Inside were stacks of offshore bank statements, stolen medical records from David’s clinic, and a recently signed insurance policy taken out in my name—worth three million dollars, set to activate only upon my accidental death.
