PART 4: The Last Letter

Claire reached back into her purse and pulled out a thick envelope sealed with red wax, handing it to me with trembling fingers.

“He wrote this during his last week in hospice,” she said quietly. “He made me swear on my life that I wouldn’t let you see it until after the service was over.”

My thumb broke the wax seal, unfolding the letter written in Robert’s familiar, elegant script. Tears blurred my vision before I could even finish the very first line.

“My sweetest Evelyn,

If you’re reading this, then Claire has executed the final stage of our plan, and you are completely safe. The house is yours, free and clear. The accounts are secure. The debt is gone forever.”

“I knew you would hate me for pushing you away. I knew it would break your heart, but breaking your heart was the only way to save your future.”
