“He didn’t marry me because he loved me, Evelyn,” Claire confessed, wiping a tear from her cheek as she sat on the edge of the sofa. “I’m a corporate bankruptcy attorney.”

I stared at her, the room spinning as the pieces of thirty-nine years of devotion began to rebuild themselves in my mind. “A bankruptcy attorney?”

“He came to my office the day after his diagnosis,” Claire explained, her voice thick with emotion. “He knew that if he died while still married to you, the predatory lenders would come after your house, your pension, and your independence.”

Under state law, marrying a licensed financial specialist allowed Robert to legally restructure his assets, shield our marital home in a private trust solely in my name, and absorb the lawsuit under a corporate shell that dissolved upon his passing.

“He wore that blue tie on our signing day,” Claire whispered, “because he said it was the only piece of you he was allowed to take with him to the grave.”
