PART 4: The Mass Exit
“You can’t freeze my accounts!” David yelled, abandoning all pretense of dignity as he pointed a trembling finger at Claire. “I am your father!”
“And she is the woman who cooked your meals, raised your children, and covered your mistakes for forty years while you built an ego out of her sacrifice,” Claire said, setting the microphone back on its stand.
She turned to face the room of fifty guests—business partners, lifelong friends, and extended family.
“The dinner is fully paid for by my mother,” Claire announced warmly into the microphone. “Anyone who wishes to stay and celebrate the extraordinary, strong woman who actually kept this family together is welcome to sit with us. Anyone who came to celebrate my father’s betrayal can follow him out the door.”
Within seconds, the room shifted. David’s long-time business associates stood up, quietly adjusting their jackets, avoiding his gaze as they walked over to kiss my cheek and offer their sincere apologies before exiting.
Lydia didn’t wait. Seeing that the penthouse, credit cards, and luxury lifestyle had evaporated in a single speech, she grabbed her designer handbag and hurried out the side doors without looking back at David once.
