PART 4: The Boardroom Confrontation
Five days later, clad in a simple black suit and carrying the green backpack, I walked into the top-floor boardroom of Vance Maritime Headquarters.
At the head of the long oak table sat Julian Vance—Thomas’s opportunistic nephew—surrounded by corporate attorneys preparing to liquidate the company’s charitable foundations and divide the assets among themselves.
“Can I help you?” Julian asked sneeringly, looking down his nose at me as I entered. “This is a private executive session. Security—”
“She stays,” Thomas’s attorney announced, stepping into the room right behind me and laying a stack of court-certified estate documents onto the conference table.
“This is Sarah Vance,” the attorney declared, his voice ringing across the silent room. “Widow of Thomas Vance, sole beneficiary of his estate, and owner of fifty-two percent of this corporation’s voting stock.”
Julian’s face turned from smug satisfaction to pure, unadulterated shock. “This is absurd! He was a dying old man! She manipulated him!”
“I married a man who had nothing but a soda can pull tab to give me,” I said, stepping forward and placing my hands flat on the table, my voice firm and clear. “And as long as I hold his legacy, you will not dismantle the workers’ pensions or the community hospitals he funded.”
What was the final outcome of Sarah’s new journey? Continue reading Part 5 below for the final resolution.
