We had no choice but to initiate takeoff, pushing the throttle forward as the heavy jet lifted smoothly into the dark clouds. At thirty thousand feet, the seatbelt sign clicked off, and the terrifying reality of our isolation set in. Down in the cabin, two hundred innocent passengers were resting, completely unaware of the deadly game playing out above them.

I handed the controls to my co-pilot, stepping out into the galley under the pretense of checking the mid-flight meal service. My heart hammered against my ribs as I walked down the narrow carpeted aisle toward row fourteen. Julian sat quietly by the window, staring out into the black void, holding a small silver detonator disguised as an antique pocket watch.

He looked up, meeting my eyes with a cold, hollow smile that chilled me to the very bone. “You always loved being in control, Captain,” he whispered above the engine roar.
