Part 6: When to Seek Medical Evaluation for Nail Changes
While ordinary vertical ridges are completely normal, specific symptoms should be checked by a dermatologist or healthcare provider:
- Horizontal Grooves (Beau’s Lines): Deep indentations running across the nail plate from side to side.
- Dark Vertical Pigment Bands: Dark brown, black, or red lines underneath the nail bed that change in size or shape.
- Nail Splitting or Thickening: Severe brittleness causing the nail to split deeply or detach from the underlying nail bed (onycholysis).
- Color Changes: Sudden yellowing, whitening, or bluish discoloration across multiple nails.
