Part 4: How to Differentiate IGH from Other Skin Conditions
While IGH is completely benign, other conditions can also cause white spots on the skin and may require different care:
- Idiopathic Guttate Hypomelanosis (IGH): Small (1–3 mm), flat, porcelain-white spots predominantly on forearms and shins; harmless and non-contagious.
- Tinea Versicolor: A superficial fungal overgrowth that causes scattered, slightly scaly light or dark patches, usually on the trunk, chest, or back.
- Vitiligo: An autoimmune condition causing larger, expanding smooth white patches across various body regions, often symmetrically.
- Pityriasis Alba: Lightened, slightly dry or scaly patches commonly seen on the cheeks or arms of children, often linked to eczema.
