Part 2: The Science Behind White Sun Freckles

The condition shown in the image is most commonly known as Idiopathic Guttate Hypomelanosis (IGH)—often referred to as “reverse freckles” or white sun spots.

Unlike dark freckles caused by an overproduction of melanin, IGH occurs when localized skin cells (melanocytes) stop producing pigment altogether. This localized loss of pigment creates smooth, teardrop-shaped white spots that range from 1 to 3 millimeters in size.
