Part 2: The Science Behind Onychoschizia (Peeling Nails)
The medical term for nails that split, peel, or become brittle is onychoschizia. Your fingernails are made up of horizontal layers of a tough protective protein called keratin, bonded together by natural oils and moisture.
When nails are repeatedly exposed to harsh environmental factors or internal deficiencies, the keratin bonds break down. This causes the layers to separate at the free edge, leading to the flaking and chipping visible in the image.
