Part 4: Other Common Causes of Swollen Feet
Foot swelling does not automatically mean heart disease; several non-cardiac factors can cause edema:
- Venous Insufficiency: Weakened valves in leg veins that allow blood to pool locally rather than flowing back up efficiently.
- Kidney or Liver Disease: Impaired organ function leading to fluid imbalance or low levels of albumin in the blood.
- Medication Side Effects: High blood pressure drugs (such as calcium channel blockers), NSAIDs, or steroids causing fluid retention.
- Lifestyle Factors: Prolonged sitting or standing, high sodium intake, or local inflammation and injury.
