Nocturnal leg cramps (often called “charley horses”) occur when a muscle involuntarily contracts and refuses to relax.
These spasms primarily target the calf muscles (gastrocnemius and soleus), foot arches, or hamstrings. When nerve signals misfire or muscle fibers lack key hydration and minerals, the muscle locks into a hyper-contracted state, causing intense localized pain until stretched out.
