I mowed the lawn for the 82-year-old widow living next door — and the following morning, a sheriff showed up at my house with a terrifying request.
I was 34 weeks pregnant and completely on my own. My ex left the moment I told him about the pregnancy, abandoning me with a mortgage and bills that made my hands shake every time I looked at them. For months, I’d been buried in overdue notices.
Last Tuesday felt like the lowest point of my life. It was 95 degrees outside, my back was aching terribly, and I had just received the call — foreclosure proceedings had officially begun.
I stepped outside because I felt like I couldn’t breathe. That’s when I noticed Mrs. Higgins. She was 82 years old, recently widowed, and struggling to push an old rusted lawnmower through grass that had nearly reached her knees.
I probably should’ve gone back inside considering I already had enough problems of my own, but I didn’t. I walked over, gently took the mower from her hands, told her to sit down and rest, and spent the next three hours cutting her lawn.
By the time I finished, my ankles were swollen, my shirt was drenched with sweat, and several times I had to stop just to catch my breath through the pain. When I finally finished, she squeezed my hand softly. “You’re a good person,” she whispered quietly. “Don’t ever forget that.”
I didn’t think much about it afterward, and that night, I barely slept at all. Then, early the next morning, the sound of sirens jolted me awake right outside MY house.
My heart immediately sank. A loud knock echoed against the front door, and when I opened it, the sheriff was standing there with two patrol cars idling behind him. “Ma’am,” he said in a serious tone, “we need to ask you a few questions regarding Mrs. Higgins.”
My stomach twisted instantly. “What happened?” He hesitated for a moment before answering: “She was found DEAD this morning.”
Everything around me went silent. “I… I just helped her yesterday,” I whispered shakily. His expression didn’t change: “We know. That’s EXACTLY why we’re here.”
My knees started trembling. “Did I do something wrong? I only mowed her lawn—” “Then you won’t mind explaining THIS,” he interrupted sharply, pointing directly toward my MAILBOX.
My blood turned ice cold. “Go ahead,” he said. “Open it yourself.” My hands shook so badly I could barely lift the lid, having absolutely no idea what I was about to find. But the second I saw it—I SCREAMED.
