“I’d like everyone to help me welcome Sarah, who is sitting in seat 4B,” Daniel’s voice boomed softly through the cabin speakers. “Today is a very special milestone for us, and I couldn’t imagine being anywhere else tonight.”
The cabin erupted into polite applause and cheerful gasps. I sank slowly back into my seat, my knees trembling so violently that my purse slipped to the floor.
Seat 4B. First Class.
I leaned out into the aisle just enough to look toward the front. A stunning woman in a tailored emerald silk jumpsuit was sitting up straight, glowing with pride as she blew a delicate kiss toward the locked cockpit door.
My chest caved in. I pulled my face down into my lap, my throat closing up as tears stung my eyes. The red dress—the dress from our first date that I had carefully zipped up just two hours ago—suddenly felt like a cruel joke.
He hadn’t missed our anniversary because of bad luck or crew scheduling. He had scheduled himself on this exact flight to celebrate with someone else.
