THE SECRET IN THE FOREST

Lidia entered the butcher shop as soon as they opened and asked sixty kilos of beef to weigh. Ovidiu stood still with the knife in his hand.

The old woman had always led a modest life and until then only bought small cuts of meat. Now, instead, he counted old bills with trembling hands and rushed the heavy packages.

He said his son had come to visit and that there would be a great family meal. But that same night, Ovidiu learned that the woman’s son had died several years ago.

The next morning, the woman came back and bought sixty kilos of meat again. Then once more. She avoided any conversation, refused all help, and always looked over her shoulder, as if someone were following her.

The news spread quickly through the village. Some thought he fed stray dogs. Others said he was selling the meat in secret. But no one could explain why he loaded the packages to an abandoned ship on the edge of the forest.

On the fourth day, Ovidiu called the police. When officers arrived, they found traces of blood on the cement floor, broken bags and a metal door closed from inside. Lydia was there, pale, with her hands stained and her eyes full of fear.

“Please,” he whispered. Don’t go in.

That made everyone stay even more still. The police forced the door. The smell was heavy, wet, almost unbearable. They took a few steps in the darkness, illuminated the interior… and they were left speechless.
