THE SECRET HEIRS

Five years ago, Roland Ashby threw his pregnant wife out of the house with two garbage bags and nothing else.

He didn’t know about the pregnancy. He just knew he wanted somebody more impressive-looking to stand beside him.

“You’re worthless,” he told her. “You didn’t contribute anything to my success.”

Naomi left Castleton Heights that same night and built an entire life out of nothing, alone, in a small rural town, raising twins on diner tips and sheer determination.

Five years later, Roland is richer than he’s ever been, about to marry a senator’s daughter in the wedding of the season.

Out of pure pride, he sent Naomi an invitation.

“Come see how beautiful the life is that you abandoned. Wear your finest dress, if you even have one. Food is on me.”

He wanted her to feel exactly as insignificant as she had the night he threw her out.

She almost didn’t come. Then she thought about her children, and about the day they’d finally ask her why their father never once tried to look for them.

So a black luxury car pulled up to the estate, twenty minutes before the ceremony began.

Two small children stepped out, one on each of her hands. Every single conversation in that courtyard fell silent at once.

Roland’s face lost all its color. “Who are they?” he asked, though his own eyes had already answered the question for him.

What Naomi said next didn’t just leave him stunned. It brought the entire wedding to a complete standstill.
