“We’re leaving,” my father announced firmly. He took my mother by the arm, helping her up from her seat. She looked at Claire with a mixture of heartbreak and disappointment, unable to say another word.

As my father reached the front door, he stopped and turned to look at me. The tension between us, accumulated over weeks of pressure and guilt, seemed to dissolve into a somber realization.

“I’m sorry,” my father said simple and low. “We should have looked closer. We should have asked more questions before demanding anything from you.”

“Thank you, Dad,” I replied.

They walked out into the carpeted hallway of the building. Claire hesitated at the doorway, looking back at me with pure venom in her eyes. “You think you won?” she hissed in a low voice. “You destroyed everything.”

“You destroyed it yourself the day you wrote that message,” I said calmly. “Please leave my home.”

She turned around and hurried down the hallway to catch up with our parents, her steps quick, confident, and entirely unhindered.

I closed the heavy front door and locked it. The apartment was completely silent except for the soft hum of the refrigerator and the distant rattle of a train passing along the tracks several blocks away. I walked back to the living room, picked up the remote, and turned off the screen.

For the first time in ten years, the space felt entirely mine, quiet, solid, and built on the truth.
