I tapped the remote one more time. The screen switched from the spreadsheet to a single image of a text thread sent four years ago. The contact name at the top was clear, and the words were unmistakable.

The message read: My parents will pay for everything as long as they think I’m too sick to handle a real job. If I pretend it’s getting worse, they won’t ever ask me to move out or get a full-time position. It’s so much easier than working forty hours a week.

The room became so quiet that the faint, rhythmic clinking of the radiator against the far wall sounded overwhelmingly loud. My mother stared at the text on the screen, her eyes moving across the lines once, twice, three times. The color slowly drained from her face.

My father sat entirely still. He didn’t speak. He didn’t reach for his glasses. He simply looked at the message, his jaw tight.

Claire’s head snapped up. Her meek posture vanished in an instant, replaced by a sudden, sharp panic. “Where did you get that? That’s fake. Someone forged that!”

“It came directly from Maya,” I said. “Your old roommate. The one who had to cover your half of the rent for three months while you told our parents you couldn’t work, right before you moved back into their spare bedroom.”

“You went to my old friends?” Claire stood up from the table, her voice shaking with anger, all signs of physical weakness completely gone. “You went behind my back to drag up old drama just so you don’t have to share what you have? You have always been bitter because Mom and Dad paid for my college and not yours!”

“I was never bitter about college,” I told her, looking her directly in the eye. “I accepted that years ago. I built my life with my own hands. I worked ten years of eighty-hour weeks, through winter freezes and summer heat, to clear every single penny of debt on this property. I earned this home. What I will not do is hand it over to validate a scam you’ve been running on our family for six years.”

My mother slowly turned her head toward Claire. Her voice was barely a whisper, filled with a deep, crushing disbelief. “Claire… is this true?”

“Of course not!” Claire yelled, gesturing wildly at the screen. “He manipulated those images! He hates me! He’s trying to destroy my relationship with you so he can keep his stupid apartment all to himself!”

“You didn’t deny the text when you first saw it,” my father said quietly. His voice carried a cold, heavy weight that I had never heard before. He looked at his daughter, really looked at her, as if seeing her clearly for the first time in nearly a decade. “You asked where he got it. You didn’t ask what it was.”

Claire opened her mouth to speak, but no sound came out. The carefully constructed narrative she had maintained for years was unraveling completely right in front of them, piece by piece.

My father stood up from the dining chair. He did not look at me, nor did he look at the television screen. He reached down, picked up the leather folder containing the property transfer documents, and folded it in half. He walked over to the small trash bin near my kitchen counter and dropped the folder inside.

“Dad, wait!” Claire pleaded, taking a step toward him. “You can’t believe him over me!”

“We paid your medical bills,” my mother said, her voice cracking as tears finally began to stream down her face. “We paid for your treatments, your food, your insurance, your car. We spent our savings making sure you were comfortable because we thought you were in pain.”

“I was in pain!” Claire insisted, her tone growing desperate. “It was hard for me! You don’t know how stressful it was!”
