Marcus frowned, his gaze lingering on the faded leather-bound notebook I held tightly against my chest as we stepped inside the quiet foyer.
Vanessa strutted through the living room, running her manicured fingers across the mahogany furniture with a possessive, dismissive sneer.
“We’ll be replacing most of this outdated junk once the deed is officially transferred to my name,” she announced carelessly, entirely oblivious to the tension hanging in the air.
Marcus turned to me, his jaw set in a stubborn line. “My father was senile during his final months, Ava. Whatever papers you think you have, my legal team will tear them apart.”
“Your father was sharper than you ever gave him credit for, Marcus,” I replied, my voice steady and unwavering as I sat down at the dining table.
I opened the folder, laying out a series of notarized financial ledgers and a sealed, official document stamped with the crest of the state superior court.
Marcus’s confident smile faltered as his eyes scanned the top line of the court document, recognizing his father’s distinctive, elegant signature.
“When you ran away three years ago,” I explained quietly, “you left your father with over two hundred thousand dollars in undisclosed gambling debt.”
Marcus went completely pale, his hands trembling slightly as he reached down to pick up the detailed bank statements.
