Evelyn refused to let Mara and Caleb walk back to their isolated farmhouse alone in the midday heat.
Following at a safe distance in her car, Evelyn watched as the mother and son approached the porch, where Arthur Bennett stood waiting with crossed arms.
Arthur was a controlling, formidable man whose quiet demeanor hid years of coercive control, financial isolation, and hidden physical abuse.
“Where have you been?” Arthur demanded, stepping down off the porch as Mara instinctively shielded Caleb behind her back. “And why are you wearing that ridiculous coat?”
Before Mara could manufacture an excuse, Evelyn stepped out of her vehicle, carrying her emergency medical kit and a calm, immovable sense of purpose.
“I called for an emergency health check, Arthur,” Evelyn declared smoothly, stepping directly into the driveway between him and his family.
