PART 2: THE UNOPENED LETTER
A silence settled over the crowded auditorium as Nora’s voice echoed through the speakers.
I stood near the aisle, my heart pounding against my ribs, unable to process what they were holding.
Maya unfolded the yellowed piece of paper with trembling fingers, adjusting her mortarboard as a tear slid down her cheek.
“Our biological father left this note twenty-two years ago,” Maya spoke into the microphone, her voice steadying. “We found it hidden in the back of an old filing cabinet at home last month.”
The entire audience held its breath, wondering why these three young women were sharing a family secret on their biggest day.
“He wrote that we were a mistake, that we would ruin his life, and that he was leaving us to someone who didn’t know any better,” Maya continued.
I felt cold sweat break out across my neck as the memory of that rainy night on my porch rushed back into my mind.
“For twenty-two years, we thought we were an obligation,” Elise said, stepping up to the microphone beside her sisters. “We thought a young man stayed because he had no choice.”
PART 3: THE DEED OF LOVE
Elise wiped her eyes and looked directly at where I was standing in the middle of the crowd.
“But last week, we spoke to the lawyer who handled our guardianship papers back in 2002,” Elise said softly.
“She told us that our biological father came back two years later, demanding to take us back only after he saw we were healthy,” Nora added.
The auditorium collectively gasped, and my knees nearly gave out beneath me as the long-buried past resurfaced.
“He tried to take us away to use our trust fund,” Nora continued, her eyes locked on mine. “And our Uncle Elias spent every penny of his life savings in legal fees to protect us.”
“He gave up his youth, his dreams, and his own comfort so we would never know we were almost traded away,” Maya wept into the microphone.
I squeezed my eyes shut as decades of silent struggles, missed opportunities, and quiet sacrifices flashed through my mind.
“He didn’t just stay because someone had to,” Maya said, her voice rising with fierce pride. “He stayed because he chose to be our real father.”
