My husband set his mother down and rushed toward me, frantically trying to grab my hand and apologize.

“Babe, please! She pressured me, you know how she gets!” he pleaded, his voice trembling in front of all our family and friends.

Before he could touch my hand, I unclipped the long trailing veil from my hair and let it drop onto the stone steps between us.

Vivian stepped forward, her face red with anger, shouting that my family was ruined for making such a petty scene over “a harmless joke.”

“This wasn’t a joke,” I said, my voice remarkably calm and steady for the first time all day. “This showed me exactly where I stand in your life.”

I turned my back on both of them, took my mother’s arm, and walked down the steps toward my father’s waiting car.
