I tucked my daughter’s hand into mine and bypassed the snickering secretary, marching straight toward the VIP express elevator.

Chloe gasped and scrambled after us, but the heavy glass doors slid shut before her outstretched hands could reach them.

As the elevator ascended to the grand penthouse ballroom, my heart pounded a steady, cold rhythm against my ribs.

My daughter clutched her colorful paper necklace against her dress, completely unaware that her father’s entire life was crashing down.

The elevator doors opened onto a sea of tuxedos, glittering gowns, and clinking champagne flutes celebrating Dominic’s biggest corporate milestone.

There, at the center table, sat my husband with his arm wrapped tightly around a woman who wore a diamond ring identical to mine.

Beside them was an eight-year-old boy, laughing as Dominic handed him the keys to a brand-new sports car resting on a display platform.
