Ethan stood on the porch, staring at me as if looking at a stranger. The confidence he had carried for years under his mother’s enabling shadow had evaporated into thin air.
“Rachel,” he whispered, his voice cracking as he held up the bank documents. “The joint account… it’s frozen. The mortgage company says the deed is solely in your name, and they’ve issued a thirty-day notice to vacate.”
Linda sobbed louder, clutching her knees on the pavement. She had spent seven days realizing that without my salary, Ethan’s income didn’t even cover the lease on his luxury vehicle, let alone her lavish lifestyle.
When I filed for divorce, my attorney immediately secured temporary asset-freeze orders to protect my earnings from being drained. I also formally revoked the lease agreement that allowed Linda to live rent-free in my secondary investment property downtown.
“You told me we shared everything!” Ethan yelled, turning his anger toward his weeping mother. “You told me to stand my ground because she was bluffing!”
“I didn’t know!” Linda shrieked back, her pristine image completely ruined. “I thought a wife’s money belonged to the family!”
