The night of the rehearsal dinner arrived, hosted at an opulent country club that Evelyn had booked on a line of credit she couldn’t afford.

She wore a gown that matched the decor, floating around the room like royalty while whispering subtle, patronizing comments about my small family to the guests.

Graham stood beside her in a custom tuxedo, radiating smug security as he raised his glass to toast our upcoming union.

“To Claire,” Graham announced to the room of sixty wealthy patrons and family members. “The woman who completes our family and brings so much stability to my life.”

Evelyn dabbed at an eye that wasn’t crying, leaning over to the lady beside her to whisper, “She’s so fortunate we took her in.”

That was the exact moment I stood up, smoothing down my silk dress, and signaled the audio-visual technician sitting in the back of the banquet hall.

“Thank you, Graham,” I said clearly, my voice echoing through the expensive speakers. “Before we toast to stability, I’d like to share a short audio clip that truly captures the spirit of our joining families.”

The room grew dead silent as the crystal-clear recording from the shoe boutique began to play over the surround-sound system.

Evelyn’s face turned from glowing pride to absolute, chalk-white terror in a fraction of a second.
