THE SACRIFICE OF LOVE

Robert and I had shared thirty-nine years of marriage. We had faced life’s hardest moments together.

But after Robert was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer, he slowly pulled his hand away from mine. “I don’t want you beside me anymore,” he said quietly. “I want to spend whatever time I have left with the person I truly love.” Those words have never stopped echoing in my mind.

Just three weeks after our divorce was finalized, he married Claire, a coworker who was ten years younger than I was. On their wedding day, Robert wore the blue tie I’d given him for one of our anniversaries. For some reason… that hurt more than anything else.

He died four months later. I didn’t attend the funeral, even though I spent the entire day crying after hearing the news. Still… nothing could have prepared me for what happened the very next morning.

I couldn’t explain why… but I invited her inside. She sat quietly, twisting her hands together, unable to meet my eyes.

Then, without warning, she looked up and asked, “You still don’t understand what Robert really did for you… do you?” I froze. “What are you talking about?”

Claire reached into her purse and slowly pulled out something that made my heart pound. “He told me to find you only after he died,” she whispered. “He wanted to make absolutely certain you received what he believed you deserved.”

My hand trembled as I reached for what she was holding. The moment I saw it… my heart stopped.
