“Claire was never his lover,” I whispered, the crushing weight of thirty-nine years of love rushing back into my chest.

Claire shook her head, pulling a small silver key from her pocket and placing it directly into my palm.

She explained that she was a trusted estate paralegal who agreed to play the part of the new wife so Robert could qualify for a specialized clinical trial paid entirely through a private research grant.

By marrying her legally, his medical debts were completely isolated, leaving every bit of our home, accounts, and life insurance untouched and transferred solely to me.

“He wore your anniversary tie every single day he went to the clinic,” Claire said through her tears. “He never stopped loving you, not for a single second.”

She unlocked a small briefcase she had left by the front door, revealing a recorded video message Robert had prepared during his final days.
