Mara leaned in close, her voice trembling with raw emotion as the distant echo of elevator doors opening signaled our parents’ arrival.
“When we were seven years old,” Mara whispered, tears spilling over her dark lashes, “there was a terrible accident at the playground that no one ever talked about.”
“Owen was playing near the old metal swings, and I was right behind him. He accidentally swung back and struck me in the face, causing the irreversible nerve damage that permanently stole my sight.”
My breath hitched in my chest as the room seemed to tilt beneath me, processing a secret kept hidden for over two decades.
“Your parents knew,” Mara continued softly. “They panicked, feared legal repercussions from my adoptive family, and begged seven-year-old Owen to promise never to speak a word of what happened that afternoon.”
“Owen carried the crushing weight of that guilt every single day of his life, believing he had stolen my chance at seeing the world.”
