The atmosphere in the dining room turned instantly frigid as the investigator slid a thick dossier directly onto the white tablecloth between their wine glasses.
Andrew’s cheerful expression shattered in a split second, his face turning an ash-gray color as he recognized the official seal stamped on the front cover.
Vanessa gasped, attempting to pull her hand away from Andrew’s arm, but her movement froze as the officer with the badge placed a firm hand on the back of Andrew’s chair.
“Andrew Bennett, you are being served with formal notification of immediate suspension,” the investigator announced loudly enough for nearby tables to hear clearly.
“We have tracked over two hundred thousand dollars routed through fraudulent expense accounts,” she continued, “and every single transfer was approved during your ‘overtime’ meetings with Mrs. Mercer.”
Andrew’s head snapped around in sheer panic, searching the room for an exit, until his frantic eyes locked directly onto mine standing beside Daniel.

PART 3: THE DOUBLE BETRAYAL
The realization hit Andrew like a physical blow as he saw me standing next to Daniel, holding the gift bag containing his anniversary watch.
“Claire…” he stammered, his voice trembling as he tried to stand up, but the officer kept him firmly seated in his place.
Daniel stepped forward smoothly, placing his arm around my shoulders in a show of unified support that caused Vanessa to shrink back in utter humiliation.
“You thought you were both so clever using corporate credit cards to fund your weekend getaways,” Daniel said, his voice ringing with cold authority through the quieted restaurant.
“What you didn’t know, Andrew, is that my firm owns forty percent of the equity in your company,” Daniel added, pulling a signed legal document from his pocket.
Every single luxury trip, expensive dinner, and secret apartment lease had been carefully logged and turned over to state prosecutors earlier that afternoon.
Andrew looked at me with tears of desperation forming in his eyes, begging me to intervene, but I simply looked at him with complete, unyielding indifference.
