Conrad Whitcomb entered the private surgical suite at Columbia Presbyterian with the same imperious air he brought to boardrooms.

Accompanied by Vivian and a entourage of lawyers, he demanded the immediate attention of the lead surgeon assigned to his complex aortic repair.

A tall young man in clean surgical scrubs stepped into the consultation room, holding Conrad’s medical file in his steady hands.

“I am Dr. Mateo Vega Mitchell,” he announced calmly, his dark eyes observing the elderly couple with absolute neutrality.

“We requested the absolute best,” Vivian snapped, glancing condescendingly at the young doctor’s name tag. “We were told a brilliant fellow was spearheading this innovative procedure.”
