I plugged the flash drive into my laptop and hit play, watching my father’s weary face fill the screen in a video recorded shortly before his death.
“If you are watching this, son,” my father’s recorded voice rasped, “then your mother has likely attempted to destroy what we built.”
He revealed that my mother had spent decades attempting to funnel company funds into offshore accounts managed by my brother.
When my father discovered their embezzlement schemes, he modified his entire estate, placing all assets and the family home exclusively in my name.
My mother knew that if Vanessa gave birth to a healthy heir, her chances of ever contesting the family trust would evaporate completely.
She had intentionally tried to break Vanessa’s spirit and trigger early labor, hoping to force us apart before the estate’s final clause locked her out forever.
Just as the video ended, the front door slammed open downstairs, followed by the heavy footsteps of my mother returning with my brother.
