PART 2: THE WHISPER IN THE RAIN

My hands trembled as my fingers hovered inches above the jagged, raised tissue covering his shoulders and spine.

My brother-in-law, Julian, slowly opened his eyes, staring straight ahead at the rain-slicked tiles of the patio.

“He didn’t get sick, did he?” I whispered, my breath hitching in my throat as the realization washed over me. “This wasn’t an illness.”

Julian let out a shaky, painful breath, tears welling in the corners of his eyes as he shook his head slightly.

“My brother did this to me three years ago,” Julian revealed, his voice barely audible over the heavy downpour outside.

He explained how my husband had manipulated a tragic accident to cover up a brutal, envious assault right before our wedding day.

My husband had blamed Julian’s sudden paralysis on a rare neurological condition, locking him away in that quiet back room to keep the truth buried forever.
