The silence in the small hotel room felt heavier than the storm outside. Clara’s words hung in the air, shifting the cold, professional barrier that had stood between us for years.
“Everyone else in that office looks at me like I’m a machine,” she continued quietly, her voice missing its usual corporate edge. “You actually pay attention to the details, Liam. You listen.”
I lay there on the very edge of the mattress, my heart hammering against my ribs, afraid that making a single sudden movement would break the fragile honesty of the moment.
She turned onto her side, looking toward me in the dim light cast by the streetlamps outside the rain-streaked window. “Richard wanted this trip so he could take credit for your analysis,” she revealed softly.
By morning, the storm had cleared, but the atmosphere between us had irrevocably changed. We headed straight to the Henderson executive offices, working seamlessly as a team to secure the multimillion-dollar account.
Yet, back at the hotel that second night, as we reviewed the finalized contracts over dinner in our room, a sudden knock at the door shattered our brief sanctuary.
