PART 3: THE SECRET PROJECT
The tall man stepped down into the yard, holding his clipboard and silver whistle, his stern expression completely unreadable.
“What’s going on out here?” he asked, his voice low and deep as he approached the four trembling children gathered around the trench.
The eldest boy stood up straight, stepping between his father and the buried wooden box with a look of fierce determination.
“We were trying to hide it until your birthday tomorrow, Dad,” the teenager admitted softly, his voice cracking with emotion.
The father stopped dead in his tracks, his rigid posture suddenly softening as he looked down at the crate sitting in the dirt.
He knelt in the mud, completely unbothered by his clean clothes, and gently opened the wooden lid to reveal a handcrafted wooden playground set the children had been building in secret for their youngest toddler sibling.
Tears welled in the father’s eyes as the stoic mask he wore completely crumbled away in front of his seven watching children.
