I adopted a 16-year-old girl to fulfill my dying husband’s final wish — after his funeral, she entered my bedroom and whispered, “”It’s time you learned WHO YOUR HUSBAND REALLY WAS.””
David and I had been married for fifteen years. We had two children and the kind of love where he still warmed my side of the bed before I climbed in.
Then one sentence from the doctor tore our fairy tale apart.
“”Stage 4. We can’t save him. All we can do is keep him as comfortable as possible.””
David was fading before my eyes. Yet I could sense that his illness wasn’t the only thing haunting him. Later, he handed me a photograph of a solemn sixteen-year-old girl.
“”Her name is Grace,”” he whispered. “”Please adopt her before I die.””
My stomach turned cold.
“”Who is she? Is she your daughter?””
David shut his eyes.
“”I’ll explain everything. Just bring her home first.””
I know many people won’t understand the choice I made next. But I loved him too deeply to refuse.
Grace arrived with one faded backpack and a plastic bag of clothes. I kept my guard up at first, but our children welcomed her immediately. She helped me with everything, and whenever Grace was near, David finally smiled again.
Still, the two of them were hiding something.
They often slipped into his room and shut the door. Once, I heard Grace crying.
David brushed aside every question I asked about her.
“”Later,”” he kept saying. “”You’ll understand later.””
He died in the hospital two weeks later.
The day after his funeral, Grace entered my bedroom, pale as paper.
“”There’s something you need to hear,”” she said. “”You have no idea WHO YOUR HUSBAND REALLY WAS.””
“”What is this, Grace? My husband just died. Can’t this wait?”” I asked, too exhausted to lift my head.
Grace reached behind her back and revealed SOMETHING that made every muscle in my body lock.
“”This can’t wait. David made me swear I’d explain everything ONLY AFTER HE WAS GONE.””
