PART 2: THE PROPERTY DEED

“What do you mean the garage won’t be available?” Dad demanded, his voice rising through the receiver.

“I mean the entire house is going on the market tomorrow morning,” I replied calmly. “I’m selling it.”

There was a sudden, heavy gasp on the other end of the line. What my father had completely forgotten was that the deed to the property wasn’t in his name—it was in mine.

Three years ago, when his business collapsed and he faced foreclosure, I took on a secondary mortgage and bought the house directly from the bank to keep him off the streets.

He had paid a nominal rent whenever he felt like it, eventually convincing himself that the home was his inherent property.

“You can’t sell this house!” he shouted, his voice cracking with sudden panic. “Where am I supposed to live? Where is Emily supposed to bring the baby?”

“Family works things out, right?” I quoted his own words back to him. “You can always find another place.”
