PART 3: THE MORTGAGE HOLDER

Daniel reached into his suit jacket and produced a second folder, placing it directly beside the deed.

“Your $340,000 dream home mortgage?” Daniel continued, his voice echoing through the silent reception hall. “My firm purchased that private debt portfolio from your bank last month.”

Diane stood frozen, her face completely drained of color as our cousins and aunts gasped in unison.

She had spent years bragging about her wealth and status while belittling my sacrifices, never realizing that the man she mocked as a “broke old man” was actually her primary creditor.

“I was going to forgive the remaining interest as a family wedding gift,” Daniel added, looking at her with quiet dignity. “But disrespecting my wife in front of the people she loves comes at a price.”

Diane opened her mouth to speak, but no sound came out as her husband pulled her back into her seat, utterly mortified by the sudden turn of events.

The guests broke into spontaneous applause as Daniel turned back to me, taking my hand gently in his own.
