THE BURIED TRUTH

PART 3: DIGGING FOR JUSTICE

Panic turned into desperate rage as my husband raised the metal shovel, his eyes wild and unhinged. “You ruined everything!” he roared, pointing the rusted blade at my face.

Before he could make a move, a loud crash echoed from the front of the property as two sheriff’s cruisers smashed through the wooden driveway gate, tearing across the lawn and spinning to a stop right in the backyard.

Deputies sprang from the vehicles with weapons drawn, their voices booming across the yard. “Drop the shovel! Get on the ground! Do it now!”

My husband dropped the tool instantly, falling to his knees in the mud with his hands raised high. His mother began to wail hysterically, while Mara covered her face, begging the officers not to shoot.

Two paramedics rushed past the kneeling family with shovels and medical bags, immediately dropping to their knees beside me to carefully unearth my body from the heavy, wet soil.

“We’ve got you, ma’am,” a paramedic whispered gently, clearing the dirt from around my chest and waist while monitoring my heart rate. “You’re safe now. Just hold on.”

As they lifted my weak, mud-covered body onto a stretcher, I reached down and clamped my cold fingers firmly around the plastic bag holding my phone, protecting the evidence until the very end.
