Elias stared at the faded handwriting inside the envelope, his fingers trembling slightly.
“What does it say?” I whispered, holding my breath as my hands rested protectively over my swollen belly.
Elias looked up, his eyes shining with a mix of fury and profound sorrow. “Dad didn’t die of a heart attack, Clara. He was poisoned—and Graham signed off on the medical cover-up.”
The room seemed to tilt sideways as the horrifying reality crashed down on me. The man I had loved, the man who had promised to build a family with me, had murdered my father.
But that wasn’t all the letter revealed. The final paragraph contained a legal clause naming me as the sole rightful heir to the entire Monroe estate—a fortune Graham and Vivian had spent years trying to bleed dry.
Suddenly, heavy footsteps echoed outside the front door, followed by the sound of a key turning in the lock. Graham was home early.
