PART 3: THE UNBROKEN TRUST

My hands shook violently as I picked up one of the fresh letters dated only three days prior to our river wedding.

The letter was written by Daniel, addressed to his late wife, begging her for forgiveness for moving on with his life after her tragic loss.

“I kept her memory alive down here because I couldn’t let go of the pain,” Daniel’s voice suddenly echoed from the top of the stairs, making me jump.

He stood in the doorway, key ring in hand, his face pale and eyes glistening with heavy, long-repressed tears.

He walked down the steps slowly, explaining that after his wife’s passing, he had buried himself in grief, keeping her personal belongings sealed away in secret.

The girls hadn’t seen a ghost; they had simply snuck down months ago and seen the shrine he built while trying to process his unbearable heartbreak alone.

“I was too ashamed to tell you,” Daniel sobbed, falling to his knees on the cold concrete floor. “I thought you would leave me if you knew how broken I really was.”
