THE 75 DOLLAR BUDGET

PART 3: THE RECKONING AT THE TABLE

Diane adjusted her reading glasses and looked down at the receipt, her eyes scanning the items before landing on the handwritten bank transfer note at the bottom.

Her face drained of all color, her hands shaking violently as she stared at her son.

“Diane Prescott… transfer of $37,000,” Diane read aloud, her voice trembling with a mixture of heartbreak and rising fury. “Derek… this was the emergency life savings account from your late father’s pension fund.”

The room fell into a dead, suffocating silence as Clara and Samuel watched the drama unfold.

“Mom, wait, let me explain!” Derek stammered, sweating profusely as he backed his chair away from the table. “It was an investment! I needed the car to look high-end for my agency clients!”

“You stole your widowed mother’s entire medical reserve to buy custom car wheels while starving your own wife on $75 a month?!” Diane screamed, standing up so fast her chair fell backward onto the rug.

Maya stood quietly by the doorway, her arms crossed, watching the husband who had tried to crush her dignity get completely dismantled by his own mother and neighbors.

Samuel pulled out his phone, casually displaying a banking app. “You know, Derek, as an accountant, taking funds from a joint family trust without authorization is called grand larceny.”

Derek looked around the room, realizing that every single person present was now a witness to his financial fraud, emotional abuse, and complete moral failure.

“Pack your bags right now, Derek,” Diane spat, tears of pure rage streaming down her cheeks. “Because first thing tomorrow morning, we are going to the bank, and then we are going to the police station.”

PART 4: FREEDOM AND A FRESH START

By the next afternoon, the illusion of Derek’s wealthy, powerful lifestyle had completely shattered into pieces. Facing grand theft charges pressed directly by his mother, Derek was forced to sell his customized car, return the luxury rims, and transfer every cent back into Diane’s account.

Furthermore, his employer at the imported flooring agency caught wind of his financial misconduct and terminated his supervisor position immediately.

Maya filed for divorce that very week, utilizing the recorded testimonies of Clara and Samuel, alongside the grocery receipts and financial records, to secure a swift and clean legal separation.

She retained full possession of their apartment lease, while Derek was forced to move back into a tiny basement room at a relative’s house across town, living on an actual tight budget for the first time in his life.

With her salary liberated from supporting an ungrateful and deceptive husband, Maya transformed her home into a bright, peaceful sanctuary filled with warm light and fresh flowers.

Diane visited Maya regularly, no longer as a strict mother-in-law, but as a deeply remorseful friend who respected Maya’s unwavering courage and integrity.

One sunny Saturday afternoon, Maya sat by the open window of her dining room, listening to the soft rustle of the Willowford trees.

Marmalade purred loudly on the windowsill beside a generous bowl of fresh food, soaking in the warm sunlight.

Maya set down a plate containing a delicious, homemade grilled steak dinner, savoring the peaceful quiet of her own home.

She had survived the cruelty meant to break her, reclaimed her life with grace, and proven that true strength can never be bought or stolen.
