Part 3: The Cold Reckoning
Julian immediately straightened his posture as I approached, his predatory expression vanishing in a fraction of a second, replaced by his usual charming, polished smile.
“Ah, darling, there you are!” Julian said smoothly, stepping out from his leather chair as if he were the ultimate attentive gentleman.
“We were just talking about Chloe’s career ambitions in high-ticket commercial asset management and corporate law.”
“I was telling her that with my background in private banking and luxury real estate investments, I could introduce her to senior managing partners at top-tier litigation firms.”
I didn’t sit down; I stood right at the edge of the granite table, looking down at him with an unreadable, freezing gaze that made his smile waver slightly.
Chloe looked up at me, giving me a subtle, knowing nod, her phone lying face-down on the table where she had secretly kept an active voice recording running the entire time I was away.
“Is that what you were offering her, Julian?” I asked softly, my voice calm, even, and completely devoid of any emotion.
“Because from where I was standing near the terrace entrance, it sounded like you were offering her private equity funds, luxury sports sedans, and a secret apartment in exchange for betraying her mother.”
Julian’s face went stiff, his eyes darting quickly to the surrounding tables to see if any high-society patrons were watching our interaction.
“Darling, you completely misunderstood—” Julian began, reaching out to grab my hand in a desperate attempt to perform damage control.
I pulled my hand back sharply before he could touch my skin, pulling a velvet jewelry box from my leather handbag and tossing it heavily onto the center of the table.
Inside the box sat the two-carat diamond engagement ring he had placed on my finger just three weeks ago during a fine dining event at an exclusive waterfront restaurant.
“The engagement is over, Julian,” I said clearly, my voice ringing out across the quiet coffee shop with absolute authority.
“I want you to pack your personal belongings and clear out of my guest house before five o’clock today.”
“If your custom European sports car or your high-end golf equipment is still on my private estate grounds after five, my private security contractors will have them towed directly to the impound lot.”
Julian’s charming facade finally shattered completely, exposing the ugly, arrogant rage boiling just beneath his expensive corporate exterior.
His face flushed red, his jaw clenching as he grabbed the velvet box and stood up, towering over me in a desperate bid to intimidate me.
“Are you insane?!” Julian hissed under his breath, his voice dripping with venomous contempt.
“You’re a middle-aged, divorced woman who got lucky enough to secure a handsome, successful partner like me!”
“You think you can find another high-yield investor who will look past your age, your emotional baggage, and your strict lifestyle demands?!”
“You should be thanking me for offering to manage your domestic affairs, your property tax liabilities, and your home mortgage consolidations!”
Chloe stood up beside me, pulling out her smartphone and tapping the screen to play back his own voice at full volume: “…her multi-million-dollar suburban property and her high-yield banking trusts are the main reasons I proposed to her so quickly…”
Julian’s eyes widened in total, absolute shock as his own recorded confession echoed clearly through the venue, drawing immediate, disgusted looks from neighboring business executives and patrons.
“You set me up,” Julian whispered, his hands trembling as he realized he had walked directly into a masterfully executed trap.
“No, Julian,” I replied, leaning in close so only he could hear my final words. “You tested my intelligence, and you failed.”
