Part 3: The Grand Proposal
Richard guided me out through the grand arched entrance of the university auditorium toward the VIP driveway.
Waiting at the curb was a sleek, late-model black European luxury sedan with tinted windows and an executive chauffeur standing at attention.
The driver stepped forward, bowing respectfully as he opened the rear door of the custom leather cabin for us.
“Where are we going, Richard?” I asked, my mind still spinning from the surreal chain of events unfolding around me.
“We are going to celebrate your triumph, Eleanor,” Richard replied with a warm, reassuring smile as we settled into the plush interior.
“You have spent forty years sacrificing your comfort, your health, and your personal ambition to raise a family that takes you for granted.”
“Today, you are going to see what happens when someone values your heart.”
The luxury vehicle glided smoothly through the city, pulling up the winding brick driveway of a gated, five-hectare private estate overlooking the coastal hills.
Manicured botanical gardens, stone architectural fountains, and stunning European sculptures surrounded a breathtaking, forty-room Georgian manor.
“This is the Vance Educational Heritage Estate,” Richard explained as we stepped out onto the sunlit stone terrace.
“Three years ago, I established a private philanthropic trust dedicated to funding innovative educational programs, teacher grants, and adult learning facilities across the state.”
“We own private schools, fund high-yield academic scholarships, and build state-of-the-art literacy centers for underprivileged communities.”
I walked along the terrace, admiring the stunning view of the blue ocean horizon, feeling a sense of peace I hadn’t experienced in decades.
Richard opened a heavy leather portfolio that lay resting on a teak patio table, pulling out a set of official corporate legal documents.
“My executive board has been searching for a Chief Academic Director to oversee our primary foundation,” Richard said, sliding the papers toward me.
“Someone with real-life experience, profound empathy, and an unshakeable passion for teaching children who have been forgotten by the system.”
“The position comes with a full executive salary, comprehensive health insurance coverage, a private housing stipend, and a ten-million-dollar annual budget to build your own custom curriculum.”
My jaw dropped in total, speech-deprived shock as I stared at the certified corporate offer letter bearing my full legal name.
“Richard… I can’t accept this,” I stammered, my hands trembling as I held the high-grade stationery.
“I’m sixty-two years old! My children told me no public school district would ever hire a novice teacher my age!”
Richard stepped closer, taking my hands into his warm grip, his eyes burning with an intense, unyielding conviction.
“Public school districts are bound by bureaucracy and small-minded expectations, Eleanor,” Richard said softly.
“We are building a legacy that will outlast us both.”
“You earned that degree with your own sweat, tears, and late-night studying while working cafeteria shifts.”
“You are more qualified to lead this foundation than any corporate executive with an Ivy League diploma.”
Before I could answer, my phone buzzed violently inside my small cloth handbag.
It was a text message from my son, Brandon, followed immediately by a group chat notification from my daughter, Clara.
Brandon wrote: “Mom, where are you? We saw a news photo of you getting into a billionaire’s luxury sedan outside the university. People are talking. You’re making our family look ridiculous.”
Clara added: “If you’re spending money on expensive dinners with old men, you need to remember that your grandson’s private school tuition is due next week.”
A cold, razor-sharp clarity washed over my heart as I read their selfish, entitled words.
I looked up from my phone at Richard, then down at the executive director contract waiting on the table.
“Where do I sign?” I asked clearly.
