Before Ethan could gather the papers, a tall man in a tailored dark suit pushed through the gathered crowd. It was Arthur Vance, the managing director of the firm and a close friend of my late father.
“Ethan,” Arthur said, his voice echoing off the high ceilings like a gavel. “My office. Right now.”
Arthur looked at Lila, his expression completely unreadable. “Ms. Parker, HR is waiting for you on the ninth floor. Hand over your access badge before you step into the elevator.”
Lila burst into tears, dropping her coffee cup as she hurried toward the security gates, leaving Ethan standing completely alone beside his packed suitcases.
