Clara leaned in closer, lowering her voice. “Because the settlement came with a deadly catch.”
“The corporation’s board didn’t just pay her off,” Clara continued. “They tried to force her to sign away your right to investigate the accident when you turned eighteen. When she refused, threats were made against your life. The only way she could keep you safe from the people monitoring her accounts was to act as if the money didn’t exist.”
Every time she said “We can’t afford that, kiddo,” she wasn’t rejecting me—she was protecting me from drawing the attention of corporate auditors who were watching her every purchase.
“She put every single penny of that settlement into a sealed, protected trust that unlocks today, on your eighteenth birthday,” Clara said, handing me a small brass key. “She lived on a tiny pension, taking on worn clothes and small bedrooms, just so no one would suspect you had the means to fight back.”
