PART 3: The Boardroom Confrontation
The air left my lungs in a sharp gasp. The floor felt like it was crumbling beneath my feet.
“He… he used my deferred scholarship?” I breathed, tears finally spilling over my burning cheeks. “That was my only way back into medical school!”
“He knew that,” David said bitterly. “If you ever went back to finish your degree, the university would have discovered the missing funds immediately. So he waited until the exact hour of graduation—when his degree was officially conferred and locked in—to serve you divorce papers, hoping you’d be too heartbroken to ever check the university records.”
A cold, sharp clarity washed over the shock in my mind, freezing my tears. The despair I felt seconds ago transformed into a quiet, burning fury.
“Where is he right now?” I asked, my voice suddenly deadly calm.
“In the Dean’s private lounge,” David replied with a grim smile. “He’s hosting a celebratory champagne toast with the head of the residency program… the very man who holds Marcus’s medical license approval.”
Without another word, I turned on my heel and marched straight toward the faculty lounge, the heavy envelope held firmly in my hand, with David following right behind me.
I pushed open the heavy oak doors of the VIP suite.
The clinking of crystal glasses stopped instantly. Marcus was standing in the center of the room, holding a glass of champagne beside Dean Miller and several high-ranking hospital directors.
When Marcus saw me step inside, his face instantly darkened with annoyance.
“Sarah?” Marcus said loudly, taking a step toward me with an arrogant frown. “I gave you the papers. This is an exclusive private reception for medical staff. You need to leave before security—”
