David handed me the flash drive, which contained digitized copies of my intercepted university mail and proof that Marcus had submitted my old research papers under his own name to secure his prestigious fellowship.

“He filed those divorce papers today because his contract signs at midnight,” David explained. “He thought if he legally cut ties before you found out, you wouldn’t be able to claim a share of his signing bonus or challenge his academic record.”

A sudden, sharp clarity replaced my grief. The six years of late shifts, swollen feet, and tears weren’t going to end in his victory.

I turned around, clutching the flash drive and the divorce papers, and walked straight back toward the VIP reception hall where Marcus was raising a champagne glass with the hospital department heads.

“Marcus!” my voice rang out across the chandelier-lit room, stopping the clinking glasses instantly.
