PART 4: The Parking Lot Exit
Humiliated, red-faced, and unable to regain control of the room, Vanessa hurried off the side of the stage, ignoring the staring eyes of three hundred guests as the ceremony concluded.
When the ceremony ended and the crowd filtered outside, Vanessa was waiting by the main entrance in her luxury sedan, her face tight with anger and embarrassment.
She stepped out as we walked past together—Emma on my left, Ava on my right, both wearing their honor cords.
“Do you have any idea how much money I poured into this school’s foundation just to get that stage time?” Vanessa hissed, glaring at me. “You ruined my chance to connect with my daughters!”
I opened my mouth to speak, but Emma stepped forward before I could say a word.
“He didn’t say a word to us tonight, Vanessa,” Emma said quietly, her expression calm and unbothered. “We made that choice all on our own. Because for eighteen years, he showed up every single day. You only showed up when there was an audience.”
Ava wrapped her arm through mine. “Have a safe flight back to your glamorous life.”
