PART 4: The Final Trap
A sudden ring from my cell phone shattered the quiet room.
I looked down at the screen. The caller ID displayed a single name: Clara.
My stomach turned to ice, but a cold, sharp rage suddenly replaced the paralyzing grief I had carried for a month.
I answered the call, keeping my voice steady and fragile.
“Em?” Clara’s voice came through the speaker, sounding softly concerned.
“Where are you? I dropped by the house to bring lunch for the kids, but your car wasn’t in the driveway.”
“I… I had to run an errand, Clara,” I replied, looking directly at Liam’s boss, who immediately pulled out his phone to contact the lead homicide investigator.
“I came to Liam’s office to pick up his leftover personal belongings from his desk.”
There was a split-second pause on the other end of the line—a tiny, subtle beat of silence where Clara’s breath caught.
“Oh,” Clara said, her tone shifting ever so slightly into something smoother, colder.
“Did… did his boss find anything specific in his desk, Em?”
“Just some old notebooks and family photos,” I lied smoothly, staring down at the damning surveillance pictures spread out on the table before me.
“Actually, Clara, I could really use your help going through his paperwork at the house. Can you meet me there in twenty minutes?”
“Of course, sweetie,” Clara purred. “I’ll be waiting right on the porch for you.”
Twenty minutes later, I pulled into my driveway.
Clara was sitting on the front porch steps, holding a warm cup of coffee, looking like the picture of a devoted, supportive sister.
She stood up with a sympathetic smile as I stepped out of the car.
“Did you get everything, Em?” she asked softly.
Before I could answer, two unmarked police cruisers pulled into the driveway, blocking her escape route, followed immediately by an official state investigator.
Clara’s warm smile froze, her eyes darting frantically toward my car as two detectives stepped out and approached the porch with handcuffs ready.
“Clara Vance,” the lead detective announced firmly. “You are under arrest for first-degree murder, corporate fraud, and grand larceny.”
Clara looked at me in sheer terror, her face draining of all color as the handcuffs clicked around her wrists.
“Emily! What is this?!” she shrieked. “Tell them they’re making a mistake!”
I stepped forward, pulled the thick envelope from my coat pocket, and looked my sister dead in the eyes.
“Liam left a message for me, Clara,” I said, my voice unwavering and strong. “And he made sure you’d never take another thing from this family again.”
As the police led her away, I walked into the house, pulled my children into a tight, loving embrace, and knew that Liam had saved us one last time.
