PART 3: The Ultimate Sacrifice

I sat frozen, unable to process the words as Lin continued.

“Marcus knew the treatment was experimental and that he might not survive it,” Lin explained, her voice trembling. “Li Mei agreed to pay for his medical trial and secure a massive trust fund for you in exchange for him managing her overseas logistics firm.”

“He knew you would refuse the money if you knew he was sick,” she said. “He knew you would sell your house, go into debt, and destroy your own life trying to save him.”

“So he married her on paper, moved to China, and worked night and day through his illness.”

Tears streamed uncontrollably down my face as the missing pieces of ten long years finally fell into place.

The tired eyes during video calls. The generic annual messages. The complete absence of a real home.

“Where is he now, Lin?” I begged, gripping her arms tightly. “Please, take me to him! I don’t care about the money! I just want my boy!”

Lin looked at me with deep sorrow, reaching into her pocket to pull out a small leather diary and a set of keys.

“The money in the boxes upstairs… that was his salary, converted and saved for you over a decade,” Lin said softly. “Every cent he made, he kept for your future.”

“Three years ago, his condition took a sudden turn,” she continued. “He didn’t want you to see him fade away over a video screen, so he recorded dozens of generic voice messages and scheduled the bank transfers to keep sending $80,000 every Christmas until you were eighty years old.”
